2016 HOKA ONE ONE Long Island Mile Fields AnnouncedAre you ready? The Hoka ONE ONE Long Island Mile hits the track next week on Wednesday, August 31st, 2016. In its debut, last year’s event saw 7 men eclipse the 4-minute mile barrier, and 3 professional women battle down the home stretch in a photo finish. The track was on fire with David Torrence of HOKA ONE ONE taking home the men’s crowd in 3:53.91 (Watch Here) just narrowly missing the Long Island record of 3:53.39 set at the 1998 Goodwill Games by Noureddine Morceli of Algeria. On the women’s side, Amanda Eccleston of Brooks stole the show in the final meters with a 4:29.99 (Watch Here). We are excited to announce that both of last year’s champions will return to defend their titles!
Following the excitement of the 2016 Rio Olympics, we are happy to welcome five athletes who will be racing on Long Island for their first competition following the games. New Zealand's Julian Matthews will once again face off against 1500m Olympians in Chris O’Hare (Great Britain/Scotland) and Charles Philibert-Thiboutot (Canada). With the addition of David Torrence (Peru) who competed in the 5000m last week and the 2012 London Olympic silver medalist at 1500m, Leo Manzano (USA), there will be six athletes with Olympic experience toeing the line. They will however be challenged by the athletes of the local New Jersey*New York Track Club, led by meet director, Kyle Merber. He with his teammates, Colby Alexander, Johnny Gregorek and Ford Palmer have been on a tear this summer and will assuredly be battling for front position come Wednesday. On the women’s side, the charge to challenge Eccleston for her title will be led by Lauren Johnson who ran the #3 time in the world with a 4:25.04 to win the Sir Walter Miler in Raleigh, NC earlier this month. Keep a close eye on Rachel Schneider of Under Armour, last year’s rabbit. Her personal best of 4:28.50 will put her right in the hunt and she’s known for her consistency. Looking to use her strength in the mile race will be Nicole Tully of HOKA ONE ONE, who was the 2015 US 5k Champion. Her mile best is 4:29.78, and she will be chased by her younger sister and training partner, Stephanie Schappert, who’s not far behind at 4:30.07. The two Long Island natives of Lianne Farber (Northport HS) and Emily Lipari (Roslyn HS) promise to have strong home crowd support where the St Anthony’s track is a familiar place.
The all-comers meet begins at 7pm, with the elite sections going off at 9pm for the women, and 9:15 for the men. Once again, RunnerSpace will be on hand for race coverage and to live stream the event for those not able to attend. They will be resuming their collaboration with Just-In-Time-Racing, who will be in charge of timing and scoring. Athletes of all ability levels and ages are encouraged to sign up, and can register online at LongIslandMile.com or in person at Sayville Running Company (49 Main St. Sayville) or Smithtown Running Company (91 E Main St. Smithtown).
